Solar panels do not always need a fixed monthly cleaning schedule, but Southern California dust, ash, pollen, bird droppings, marine layer residue, and long dry periods can leave buildup that rain does not fully remove. Cleaning is most useful when panels are visibly dirty, production appears reduced, or the array sits near trees, birds, dust, soot, or other heavy exposure.

CHD uses panel-safe cleaning methods such as purified or deionized water and soft brushing where appropriate. Solar panels should not be treated like ordinary glass or concrete, and abrasive pads, harsh detergents, steel wool, and aftermarket coating claims should be avoided unless the panel manufacturer supports the method.

Access, safety, and expectations

Cleaning can help performance when heavy grime, ash, droppings, or sticky residue are present, but gains should not be oversold. Roof pitch, roof material, panel placement, wiring condition, and access determine whether long water-fed poles, ladder-based work, fall protection, or another method makes sense.
